Downtown TC Retailers: ‘Best Year Ever!’

Source: the Ticker

In the looming uncertainty of slumping home sales, joblessness and recession worries, downtown retailers happily reported increases in sales revenue over previous years. These early reports match optimistic forecasts by the Michigan Retailers Association.

“We were pleasantly surprised with our Christmas season,” says Beth Guntzviller of Miner’s North Jewelers. “We are above sales figures for last year, our customers were wonderful, in good moods, having fun, enjoying downtown, many were shopping and going out to dinner. It was a great holiday season — one of our best.”

Guntzviller said her top selling items were Pandora bracelets and beads, diamond earrings, pendant and engagement rings and sterling silver jewelry.

Amy Shamroe, owner of Horizon Books called this season the bookstore’s best in five years. Shamroe says she was proud to say the store’s top sellers this holiday season were all Michigan authors: “Jerry Dennis’s The Winward Shore was our top selling book of the season.” The Great Leader by Jim Harrison and Grand Traverse: the Civil War Era by John Mitchell were also strong sellers.

Liz Rucki, manager at Plamandon Shoes called this holiday season the store’s “best year ever” and said they were ready to skim ahead of last year’s sales figures. Rucki said the initiatives to get people downtown to shop have been a boon. “Ladies’ Night was a good night for us,” she says.

Kristi Wassa, manger of Cali’s Cottons says the store saw a slower start than usual, but that it got a significant boost from the sale of smaller ticket items and online sales – more sales for both as compared to previous years.

Back Country Outfitters, which has a longtime storefront on Front Street, opened its newest location on US-31 this November. Manager Eric Robinson says the new store did especially well. “We are a new business on this side of town, so for a lot of people, they wanted to check us out. That definitely added to our sales, but we may be a little skewed as to whether that was the holiday. We definitely had a great season.”

Top sellers for Back Country, according to Robinson, were North Face Apex Bionic Jackets, Smart Wool and Point6 Socks.

Rob Bacigalupi, deputy director of the Traverse City Downtown Development Authority, says sales of downtown gift certificates soared too. “Sales went very well. We are up at least 25 percent over last year.” That increase translates to more than $300,000 in revenue – all generated for downtown businesses in 2011.

Tourism Begins…

As the weather in Northern Michigan begins to warm up means that the influx in tourists has begun. The more tourists means that you need to be sure that your business name, services, products and location are easily found on every means of communication. World Wide Web has become the largest way to reach your potential clients, however without a proper portal people will never find your business. Allow Pulse Media Solutions to consult with you on creating that perfect portal to find your business.
